GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT KANGAROO ISLAND
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island. It is about 150 kms long
and its width varies from about 50 kms to less than 1 km . The Island's resident population is approximately 4,400,
a third of them living in or around Kingscote.
An absolutely typical comment from newcomers to the Island is "I had no idea it
was so big!!" What this usually means is that they did not give themselves
enough time to see everything there is to see. So, if you can, don't make the
same mistake. We think you need at least 3 days to see the main
sights, and if you can stay longer you will easily keep yourself busy for a week.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The discovery of Kangaroo Island is credited to Captain Matthew Flinders,
who landed on the Island in 1802. According to charts he left, Kangaroo
Island was named and spelled "Kanguroo Island" by Flinders in honour of
the kangaroos caught and feasted upon the day they landed.
Extensive studies by anthropologists and archaeologists suggest that
aborigines lived on the Island between 13,500 and 2,500 years ago. It seems that they arrived by landbridge as there
is no evidence of sturdy boats that would have been necessary to take them
across the waters now separating the Island from the mainland.
